WHITE COUNTY, Ga. — As White County Fire Services, along with U.S. and Georgia Forestry firefighters, have been trying knocking down a roughly 5-acre fire on Tray Mountain, those who monitor outdoor conditions are issuing alerts and in some cases burn bans for Sunday.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Eboni Deon said that Sunday’s weather conditions present a high danger to anyone lighting a fire. Deon said the high winds and very low humidity strongly increase the chances a small fire could escalate to a much larger problem.
Officials in White County have already instituted a burn ban for the entire day on Sunday. They were hopeful the Tray Mountain fire was not going to get any larger and that they would be able to extinguish it early Sunday morning.

Meanwhile, several counties issued advisories overnight to warn residents about the danger of lighting a Sunday afternoon or evening fire on their property. No “red flag” warnings have been issued at this time but according to the National Weather Service’s “Special Weather Statement” on Sunday morning, conditions will come close to the level where a warning may be issued.
Deon said the windy conditions on Sunday will subside early Monday morning and that temperatures will slowly warm over the course of the week.
