ATLANTA — Nearly 200 Chihuahuas are at a Henry County animal shelter after being rescued from what the shelter called “a hoarding situation.”
Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary said it took in 181 dogs from the home in Butts County over the weekend. The shelter said the dogs were found in deplorable conditions.
“The dogs were everywhere, literally coming out of kitchen cabinets and mattresses. I am grateful we have the staff, volunteers and resources to give these animals a new life. We will rely on our loyal donors to raise the money needed to provide medical treatment and rehab care for this many animals,” Noah’s Ark founder and president Jama Hedgecoth said in a news release.

The shelter said another 30 dogs were taken in by another shelter nearby. It also said several of the dogs are pregnant, and three of the Chihuahuas gave birth since being taken in.
Noah’s Ark said the dogs are doing well as they continue to recover from the conditions they were living in. The shelter said the dogs have been divided up into smaller groups so they can be assessed.
“Each and every dog will be treated for fleas, dewormed, spayed/neutered, and vaccinated. While physically in good shape, behaviorally the dogs have had no human socialization and will need stabilization in foster environments before being ready for permanent adoption,” the shelter said in a news release.
