Neighbors in north Georgia mountains getting ready for winter storm later this week

JASPER, Ga. — People in the north Georgia mountains are preparing for the potential for snow to hit their area on Friday into Saturday.

Severe Weather Team 2 is forecasting a winter storm to move into the area on Friday and potentially bring snow, sleet and freezing rain with it.

Jasper resident Lee Shiver told Channel 2′s Audrey Washington he has never forgotten when “snowmageddon” hit metro Atlanta 10 years ago.

“Heck yeah I remember it!” Lee Shiver laughed. “We don’t need one of those again.”

Now with snow possibly on the way for much of north Georgia, Shiver said he is getting ready.

“Let see what’s on my list: milk, bread, toilet paper,” Shiver said. “My wife said, don’t forget the champagne and pomegranate juice, and celery for Bloody Mary’s.”

But inside the Emergency Management Agency office in Jasper, Washington found a much more serious situation.

On Wednesday morning, officials met to discuss plans to keep people safe.

“Making sure we have the brine operation in place to make sure the roads are treated, to do the best we can to keep that from freezing over. Another part is making sure we have all the staff in place,” explained Kris Stancil, chairman of Pickens County Government. “We’ll start making announcements on office closures. Really try to encourage people to stay off the roads. The more we can keep people from driving in it the better.”

“We’re just gonna hunker down and enjoy the weekend,” Shiver said.

Officials said they will keep the people in the area updated on any changes or new information.
