New Orleans attack: Shamsud-Din Jabbar went apartment hunting before terror attack, FBI says

NEW ORLEANS, La. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is releasing a new image of Shamsud-Din Jabbar walking around New Orleans a month before a terror attack that killed 14 people.

The FBI says that Jabbar took a train from Houston, Texas to New Orleans on Nov. 10 before taking a train back to Houston later that night. While he was there, investigators say he was looking for an apartment to rent.

Investigators say just a few days later, he applied to rent an apartment on Orleans Street, but later told the landlord he had changed his mind.

Jabbar, 42, is accused of driving a rented truck down Bourbon Street just after 3 a.m. on New Year’s Day, killing 14 people and injuring dozens more. Jabbar himself was killed after opening fire on police officers, injuring two of them. Officers returned fire, shooting and killing Jabbar.

FBI Victim Services announced on Tuesday they have identified at least 57 people who were physically injured. A total of 136 victims have been identified, including two businesses that were damaged.

They also announced that evidence suggests that Jabbar became a more devout Muslim in 2022 and started isolating himself from society. In spring 2024, he began following extremist views.
