ATLANTA — Atlanta city leaders and neighbors held a ribbon cutting ceremony for the newest completed portion of the Atlanta Beltline’s southside trail.

Several people told Channel 2′s Kristen Holloway they couldn’t wait to walk, run or bike on the new trail.

“I love it. I went to high school over here and it’s just a great opportunity for the neighborhood and the community to continue to grow,” Kenneth Lomax said.

Tuesday’s celebration was the part of the trail that runs from University Avenue to Pittsburg Yards. There are four more segments that are still in design.

“This is so significant to have this portion of the Beltline trail, the southside portion, to be completed because we know there are a lot of conversations about equity and whether or not all of our communities are included in how we develop as a city and its need,” Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said.

The southside trail will ultimately provide a 4-mile link between the westside and eastside trails.

Bottoms said she couldn’t be happier to see the incredible growth in Atlanta.

“To create this connectivity for our families, for our kids to be able walk safely to school, is a tremendous win for the city as a whole,” she said.
