NWS confirms EF-1 tornado in Newton County, 6 others across north Georgia

COVINGTON, Ga. — The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Newton County during Saturday night’s storms.

The tornado touched down in Covington around 4:30 p.m. and tracked from the intersection of Washington Street and Walker Bend Parkway to Woodhaven Drive, officials said.

It’s the strongest of the seven that touched down across north Georgia on Saturday evening. Tornadoes that measured EF-0 touched down in DeKalb, Gwinnett, Clayton, Pike and two hit Coweta County.

Several Channel 2 Action News viewers sent in photos and videos of the tornado on Saturday afternoon.

Stunning video showed the rotating cloud as it moved through.

At least two people sustained minor injuries when a the tornado blew over a homeless shelter, county officials said.
