NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police in Alpharetta tell Channel 2 Action News that they arrested a man driving 155 mph in an exotic sports car ... while drunk.

According to police, an officer was patrolling Ga. 400 early Sunday morning when she noticed the McLaren sports car fly past her.

“Speeds reached as high as 155 mph, at which point she activated her emergency equipment, and attempted to try to pull the vehicle over,” said Alpharetta Police spokesman Jason Muenzer.  “That vehicle went on for several more miles.”

Dashcam video shows the officer speed up to catch the driver, who eventually pulled over near Northridge Road in Sandy Springs.

“That car came to such a sudden stop that there was smoke coming from the brakes,” Muenzer said.

He said the driver, identified as Dwayne Pope, didn’t have much of an explanation about why he turned the highway into a test track.

“This could have been extremely bad, not only for himself, but also for the family out there driving, who’s trying to get home,” Muenzer said.

An incident report said Pope’s eyes were glassy and that he smelled of alcohol. When asked how much he’d had to drink, the report said Pope told the officer “not much.”

After failing a field sobriety test, police said they took Pope to jail for DUI, speeding, failing to maintain his lane and for driving with an expired tag.

“We’re just thankful everybody was able to go home that night safely,” Muenzer said.

Drivers Petchenik told about the arrest were surprised to hear about it.

“You lock him up and throw away the key,” said Kwisi Tshombe. “They need to get tough policies on drivers who endanger the lives of others.”
