NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Crews battled a fire Saturday at a landfill in north Fulton County.

The fire at Chadwick Landfill in Milton started as a brush fire around noon and spread to nearby debris, which fueled the flames.

“Very bad, very bad and the houses are so close here. Lots of big subdivisions here, wouldn’t take much I guess to really spread,” neighbor Daryl Mason said.

Emergency responders were concerned about the fire spreading.

“Given the high winds that we have today and the low humidity, we’re constantly concerned about brush fires and their ability to get out of control very quickly,” Milton Deputy Fire Chief Matthew Marietta said.

Crews from Milton, Cherokee County and Alpharetta responded to set up a perimeter and bring in water to fight the fire.

By late afternoon, the brush fire had been contained, but the flames spread to the landfill’s construction debris.

The debris fire was contained by Saturday night, but crews will keep a close eye as the garbage continues to smolder.

Fire crews estimate 20 to 30 acres have burned.

Marietta said people in the area could see smoke for several days.

“Close the windows, turn on the air conditioner, put your car on recycle and try to keep that smoke from getting into your car and into the place that you live because that’s not good for you in large quantities,” he said.

Crews will monitor the landfill closely for the next few days.
