GBI investigates its 12th officer-involved shooting in 15 days

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — A man wanted in another state was captured outside a Sandy Springs hotel, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles told Channel 2 Action News officers with the Sandy Springs Police Department opened fire on a man they said was trying to speed away from officers Friday night.

Miles said this is the 12th officer-involved shooting in just 15 days.

That man has been identified as Jaquan Barnes, 22, wanted out of South Carolina on charges of aggravated assault.

Miles said Barnes was parked outside the Courtyard by the Marriot hotel along Peachtree Dunwoody Road.

Miles said one of the responding officers attempted to box in Barnes, who was still inside his car. Barnes accelerated and rammed into two patrol cars, Miles said.

"The officer opened fire striking the suspect in the hand," Sandy Springs police Sgt. Sam Worsham said.

Worsham said police are still in the early stage of the investigation. Barnes was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries and is stable.

Once released, he will be turned over to the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office and the Sandy Springs Police Department will be handling any warrants on Barnes connected to this incident.

Barnes faces charges of human trafficking, aggravated assault on a police officer, felony obstruction , possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

None of the officers involved were hurt.
