MILTON, Ga. — Milton police said a female driver pulled up at a school bus stop and told two children that their bus had broken down and that she would give them a ride to school.

The only problem? The bus was not broken down.

Police said the incident happened Friday morning around 8:30 a.m. on Bethany Road. Two Northwestern middle school students who are siblings were waiting for the bus at the end of their driveway when a black, medium-sized SUV pulled up beside them. An older white woman, possibly in her 70s or 80s, asked the children if they went to Summit Hill Elementary School.

When the children told the woman they go to Northwestern, she asked if they wanted a ride to school because their bus had broken down.

The younger child immediately went up the driveway to alert his mother, while the older child told the woman that if their bus had, in fact, broken down, their mother would bring the siblings to school.

“The juvenile siblings involved did the right thing in alerting adults,” Milton police said. “Still, we do want people to be mindful that this happened, especially as it serves as a reminder about the importance of teaching children to be careful when dealing with strangers.”

Police said they are unsure of what the woman’s motive was. Police have not been able to identify her. The children said the vehicle looked like a Toyota Rav 4 and had a red and black car seat in the back.
