Ruff started his career with the Roswell Police Department in 1995 when he signed up for the youth police explorers. Three years later, he was sworn in as an official officer.
Police said Ruff worked in various roles for the department over the course of his 23-year career.
His most recent assignment was a watch commander for the night shift patrols.
“The joy and pride he found in leading his men and women was infectious, and there was nothing he would not do or give of himself to see them succeed,” the department wrote.
