North Georgia mountain communities brace for frigid temps, up to 6 inches of snow

BLUE RIDGE, Ga. — The mountain communities of north Georgia are bracing for three to six inches of snow, and many businesses in downtown Blue Ridge plan to close on Friday.

“We’re excited. I don’t think we’ve had a good snow up here for a while,” said Tate Parker, who owns the Spice and Tea Exchange on Main Street. “We will close the shop down for Friday and Saturday.”

Emergency management officials in Fannin County are preparing for slick roads and power outages.

“The road department has already been aggressive pretreating the roads,” said county spokesman Robert Poole. “And we got our chains, cables ready to go.”

He encourages people – especially tourists who don’t know the area – to stay off the roads Friday. “The best advice I could give you is if you make it to your destination, stay put,” he said.

At Huck’s General Store in downtown Blue Ridge, employee Jaidyn Harris was eagerly awaiting the snowfall. “I am. Snow’s magical,” she said. “I’m not excited about the roads and the whole situation that comes with snow, but the snow itself has never harmed anyone.”

The town of about 1,200 people hosts many visitors from Florida, including 52-year-old Dolores Falbo of Tampa, who’s gone her whole life snow deprived. “I’ve never seen it. Never seen it. I’m excited. I’m hoping it’s enough to play in it, you know, a little bit.”

Louis and Lisa Satterlee from Cape Canaveral are honeymooning in Blue Ridge, where snow could make the trip especially memorable. “Yeah, I’ve only seen snow once,” Louis said. “She’s experienced a couple of times. We’re pretty thrilled about it, actually.”

The Koch family from Sarasota brought four small children for a winter getaway in a cabin. “We told the kids, they’re pretty excited,” said the father, Pascal Koch. “We’ve been talking about it ever since.”
