Parts of north Georgia seeing snow after days-long freeze

ATLANTA — Some parts of north Georgia are now seeing snow after days of frigid temperatures.

Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Jennifer Lopez said snow flurries will wrap up around 1 a.m. in parts of north Georgia.

Some snow was already accumulating in Whitfield County before 6 p.m. Monday.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp extended a state of emergency across the state for 24 more hours after days of dangerous cold.

All weekend, the metro Atlanta area has been experiencing some of the coldest weather the area has seen in nearly nine years.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said it is prepared to treat roads if necessary.

The possibility of snow comes on the heels of a weekend that left thousands in the metro Atlanta area without water as pipes burst in the bitter cold. Several counties issued boil water advisories as crews worked to prepare water lines.

Deon said the storm could begin as a brief rain and snow mix, then turn into light snow.
