Northview High School senior killed in ATV accident

NORTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Family and friends are remembering a Northview High School senior killed in an ATV accident.

Abbey Rice was on a trip with her volleyball teammates when she died Friday.

Those who knew her describe the teen as a funny and happy girl who had a great spirit about her.

"We're all very heartbroken and we'll never be the same with the loss of Abbey. I mean, she was a wonderful, beautiful person,” said family friend Dana Martin.

Channel 2’s Carl Willis spoke with Abbey’s father. He said his daughter could have done anything this summer, but chose to go on a mission to the Dominican Republic. He said that represents the type of person she was.

"(It) shows a lot of maturity and selflessness and a vision to give of herself to others,” said Martin.

According to a Fulton County Schools spokesperson, Abbey and some of her volleyball teammates were in south Georgia Friday on a team-building trip. It wasn't school-sponsored, but parents were involved and present.

The teammates were riding ATVs when one of them rolled, causing Abbey’s fatal injuries.

Joseph Martin, who is a friend of the teen, said the school is honoring Abbey.

“Our student council got together and they spent a lot of time making ribbons and they handed them out to the senior class,” said Joseph Martin. “It's a small reminder, but it's enough to just keep us all together and keep us strong in a hard time."

Abbey's father said this was a tragic accident. Ever since then, the community has come together to support his family donating more than $18,000 in just matter of days.

“It really does take a village, and we need to stick together and be there for the family in any way we can,” said Dana Martin.
