Oconee County man shoots and kills mom, stepdad, deputies say

OCONEE COUNTY, Ga. — Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a man they say shot and killed his mother and stepfather overnight.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to a shooting on Bouldercrest Circle just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Deputies found two adults dead in the home when they arrived. Two juveniles were also in the home unharmed.

The victims were identified as Ashley Schutza and Benjamin Smith.

Schutza’s son, Peyton Moyer, was named the suspect. Investigators learned that after the shootings, Moyer had taken one of the victims’ cars and fled the scene.

After a short chase with Athens-Clarke County police, Moyer was found and arrested.

The charges he will face are unclear at this time.
