NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. — A shooting at a Covington motel ended with a suspect dead and an officer hospitalized Tuesday night.
The shooting happened at the Oyo Hotel off Alcovy Road around 10:30 p.m. Covington police confirmed to Channel 2 Action News that an officer was shot in the head.

The officer is hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital where he was in critical condition but is now listed as stable.
Police said a man identified as 23-year-old Treyvorius Stodghill was also shot during an exchange of gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this time, details are limited, but Covington police spokesman Lt. Daniel Digby said officers were responding to a domestic fight when the shooting happened.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office deputies are also on the scene assisting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation will issue a statement later today.

This is the first shooting involving Covington police since November 2021 when a suspect was shot and killed after a domestic dispute. No officers were hurt.
In Sept. 2018, another Covington police officer was shot in the head and also in the neck by a suspect. Channel 2 Action News followed Officer Matt Cooper’s recovery and the support for his family from Chief Stacey Cotton and the department for years.
Cooper would later returned to work in May 2020 nearly two years after the shooting.
This is the 40th officer-involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2023.
