ATLANTA — Detectives are looking for leads in the shooting death of a man whose family is shocked that anyone would be after him.
Atlanta police and the victim's family say the shooting was not random, and that someone shot at the house on purpose.
They think the shooter may not have killed his or her intended target.
The family of 23-year-old Dontavious Stokes said he had no enemies.
Stokes was shot and killed while watching TV in his living room early Saturday morning.
A roommate was upstairs at the time.
His family wants anyone who knows something about the murder to come forward.
"He was a nice person, didn't bother anybody. Cool, laid back, and got a long with everybody. So I just can't understand why somebody would want to come do that to him," Stokes’ mother, Shina Stokes-Johnson, said.
Stokes' house on Smith Street was riddled with bullet holes. More than a half-dozen shots were fired in all, but his family said it only took one to kill him.
“Went in his torso, that was the shot that killed him," Stokes’ cousin Tynice Shahid said.
“He was laying down, his head was on the side of the sofa his glasses thrown on the other side and bullets were all through the TV all through the walls," Stokes-Johnson said.
Stokes' family describes him as a peacemaker. They said they cannot think of one enemy he had, but they do believe the place was targeted.
Neighbors told Channel 2’s Liz Artz they heard at least seven shots ring out around 2 a.m.
"For them to take my cousin like this, our life will never be the same. Our family will never be the same," Shahid said.
He left behind a wife, a 4-year-old son, a mother and family who all want answers in his death.
"If it was your loved one you would want someone to come forward? We want answers, want to know what happened," Shahid said.
Police are still investigating and looking for witnesses in the case.
