PAULDING COUNTY, Ga. — A grandmother’s daring sacrifice saved her grandson’s life.

Family members told Channel 2′s Chris Jose that Jean Skoglund was at home with her grandson when a fire ripped through their house on Halehaven Drive last Friday.

“She’s always my hero. She’s my mom,” said Angela Perez. “She got him out of his room, and they got separated.”

Paulding County firefighters said the cause of the fire remains under investigation, but it appears the fire started on the stove while someone was cooking.

Perez said her son escaped and called 911. She was at work on Friday morning.

“Your mother saved your son’s life?” asked Jose.

“Yes, my mother saved my son’s life,” said Perez.

Firefighters said Skoglund was trapped on the second floor. They crawled through a window to get her out, but she died at the hospital.

“If it hadn’t been for her, he would’ve been in there too,” said Perez. “We’re just asking for prayers for peace right now and really anything is useful. Anything is helpful. Even if it’s prayers.”

Perez said they rented the home.

They have established a GoFundMe page to pay for funeral expenses and to find a new place to live.
