ATLANTA — MARTA officials are investigating how a man got into an unauthorized part of the Georgia State University MARTA station and onto the tracks, before being fatally struck by a train.
Investigators said the man was struck just before 5:30 a.m. Wednesday.
MARTA spokesman Lyle Harris said service was shut down at the station while the incident was being investigated.
Harris said they are trying to determine how the man was able to access an unauthorized area of the station.
"These areas are usually secured by fences. That is part of the investigation we'll be looking to see how someone may have gotten onto the track way. We don't know exactly at this point but that is one of the things that we'll be looking at," Harris said.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the man died from his injuries.
Harris said MARTA is providing a bus transfer for people who need to travel through the station.
The incident remains under investigation.
