ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting Friday morning that ended on Interstate 285, shutting down all lanes for hours.
It started when East Point special operations officers saw a car driving erratically through the Camp Creek Market Place. After determining that the car was stolen, the officers followed the car to the Publix on Carmia Drive in southwest Atlanta, according to the GBI.
When the officers approached the suspect car, the driver sped toward the officers, hitting one East Point police car, and shots were fired, the GBI says.
"As soon as I heard the gunfire, everybody starts running towards the back. All you heard was more shots," said Dexter Lamb, who was inside a barber shop in the shopping center when it all happened.
Evidence markers and crime scene tape are now sprawled across the parking lot.
"There were like bullet shells all over here. Really, if somebody was out here, somebody would've gotten killed today," witness Nigeria Harris said.
The GBI says the car then took off, leading police on a chase onto I-285.

The GBI says the suspect ran from the car and more shots were fired by East Point police and city of South Fulton police officers. One hit the suspect. He was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for medical treatment.
All East Point officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles says right now, there is no evidence that the suspect had a gun, but in similar cases police have said they consider a car speeding toward them as a weapon.
None of the officers were injured.
This is the 93rd officer-involved shooting in Georgia this year.
