Police badge, guns stolen in series of burglaries

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators say police equipment, including weapons and badges, was stolen during a series of home burglaries.

Police have made an arrest and recovered much of the gear, but they still want to find what is still out there.

Chamblee police Detective Ray Ice says one of his badges turned up in a burglary search warrant and one of his guns turned up too.

Ice says he has investigated thousands of crimes in three decades with DeKalb police and the past year or so with Chamblee. He said he is in a different role with this case because his apartment in Brookhaven was one of those burglarized.

“I was angry for a time,” Ice said.

An investigator said Ice’s badge was one of three to turn up in search warrants linked to suspect Rahim R. Madyun.

Dunwoody Police Chief Billy Grogan said police also recovered a badge from one of his officers along with a city-issued AR-15 and shotgun. He said the Dunwoody officer is still missing two department handguns.

Brookhaven police officer Carlos Nino said investigators are convinced the burglars were not targeting law enforcement.

Nino says the big break came when a Brookhaven resident saw suspicious activity and took a picture of the tag on a red BMW connected to Madyun.

Sandy Springs police Sgt. Moman confirmed an assistant district attorney from Fulton County was also victimized and that some of her property was recovered on search warrants.

Shannon Briley, attorney for Madyun said he will plead not guilty.  She said she is considering seeking a change of venue to ensure a fair trial. As for the cases he is not charged in, she says she assumes if there was hard evidence against him, police would have made those cases.
