Police: Drunken man fires gun into neighborhood full of children

SNELLVILLE, Ga. — Snellville police arrested a man they said fired his gun from his front porch into a neighborhood of children.

The suspect, Christopher Stansbury, 33, admitted to Channel 2's Kerry Kavanaugh he was very intoxicated when police came to question him.

"I just don't remember," Stansbury said.

Stansbury said he doesn't remember much from last Friday night, the night he landed in jail. But Kavanaugh found a neighbor who did.

"We heard a loud pop and my husband said, 'that's a handgun,'" said the neighbor, who asked for anonymity for her safety.

The Snellville mother said she was outside with her husband and two children when she heard the gun shot and called police.

"We have small yards and there are too many kids around," the neighbor said.

Snellville police said it was the second call they received about shots fired.

According to the police report, when officers arrived at the home on Driftwood Place, they heard someone shouting. Eventually, they said Stansbury came outside.

"I was intoxicated. And really, the whole episode is really a fog for me," Stansbury said.

He said he has no recollection of firing any gun and said he realizes how dangerous it would be.

"Given the fact that this is a neighborhood with children, it is alarming," Stansbury said.

But, police said they recovered several guns inside the home and one empty shell casing. Investigators aren't certain they recovered the gun it came from.

According to the arrest warrant, officers believe Stansbury fired the gun while standing on his front porch.

Police charged Stansbury with reckless conduct, obstruction and discharging a firearm near a public highway or street.

Stansbury said he struggles with alcoholism and apologizes if he was a nuisance to his community.
