Man dies after trying to stab MARTA bus driver, getting shot by Roswell police, GBI says

ROSWELL, Ga. — A man who tried to stab a MARTA bus driver and was shot by police has died.

The shooting happened Tuesday afternoon near Alpharetta Highway and Elkins Road outside of a MARTA bus. NewsChopper 2 flew over the scene, where there were several police vehicles and crime scene tape strung up in the area.

Channel 2′s Michael Doudna spoke with witnesses at a car dealership close to where the shooting happened.

“And we hear the gunshots just a few yards from where we are. And we try to take cover because we thought the bullets would come to us,” a car salesman told Doudna. “It was terrible because we could all see blood and all that. It was very scary.”

According to Roswell police, a man “armed with an edged weapon” tried to stab the bus driver and then ran away. The bus driver, who was not hurt, called 911.

Officers found the man walking in the area off Alpharetta Highway near Mansell Road. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the officers approached the man, who pulled out a pair of scissors.

Officers said the man charged at them with the scissors and they tried to tase him. Officers shot the man when using the Taser did not work and started medical attention.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he later died. The GBI has not yet released his name.

Several people who work in the area told Channel 2 Action News that the suspect was a well-known homeless man, who had a peaceful reputation.
