ATLANTA — The Atlanta Police Department said over 827 guns have been stolen from cars in the city so far this year, and that those guns are playing a major role in the uptick in crime.
Now, police are asking Atlanta gun owners to make better choices with their firearms.
The department put out a message about responsible gun ownership and usage on their social media.
Since the beginning of the year, there've been over 827 guns stolen out of vehicles in the City of Atlanta. Irresponsible gun owners & criminals with guns make our city unsafe. Police say often, stolen guns fall into the hands of criminals that would not legally have access to them. These guns are then used to commit other crimes in the city.
“We don’t want violent criminals to have more access to guns. Felons can’t buy guns but they can steal them,” said Officer Steve Avery.
Police are asking gun owners not to leave firearms inside of their vehicles.
