BARROW COUNTY, Ga. — Police are searching for two gunmen who robbed an armored car behind a bank.
The incident happened behind the Bank of America at 102 N. Broad St. in Downtown Winder just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Police told Channel 2 Action News two gunmen overpowered a guard carrying money to the ATM and took the cash and the guard's weapon.
The guards told police the gunmen jumped out from behind the bushes near the truck, just as one of the guards got out of the truck.
“They were wearing dark-colored hoodies and masks,” Winder police Capt. Chris Cooper said. “It appears the suspects were basically sitting there waiting on the truck, so they knew the truck would be there.”
Police said they were there within three minutes of the alarm but the gunmen had already run away. Witnesses said the gunmen fired two shots as they got away.
“When I heard that, I came back inside the building because it was really dangerous for me,” witness German Mora said.
Police said the shots did not hit anyone. After firing, the gunmen ran through the backyard of a law office.

An employee took a photo of a gun she found in the grass. Police believe it is the guard’s gun, which the robbers stole and then dropped as they ran.
“We were able to locate the sidearm in a neighboring yard, which was very close to where the ATM is located,” Cooper said. “At this time, we still have two suspects at large and we’re trying to do what we can to determine their identity and their whereabouts.”
Police said they don't know how much money was taken.
The following schools were on a soft lockdown due to the incident:
- Winder-Barrow High School
- Russell Middle School
- Winder Elementary School
- Center for Innovative Teaching
Students were not allowed to go outside as FBI and GBI agents, along with Winder police, searched for the gunmen.
Authorities are reviewing security footage from the bank and nearby buildings.
