Police search for inmate who escaped from Meriwether County jail

MERIWETHER COUNTY, Ga. — Police are searching for an inmate who escaped from the Meriwether County jail.

Eugene Mitchell, 34, and Travion Hall, 29, broke out of the jail on Tuesday by picking a lock on the door to a utility closet, climbing pipes and crawling up a gate leading to the roof, authorities said.

Hall was captured Wednesday at the Garden Inn & Suites Hotel in Hogansville, Georgia.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with the K-9 unit, are searching for Mitchell in the woods in Greenville, Georgia.

His family owns the land where police searched, and his father allowed them onto the property.

“This is getting out of hand. It’s like he’s a fugitive,” Mitchell’s, father Melvin, said.

Melvin Mitchell says he does not know where his son is located, but he has been in contact with police all day trying to help them find him.

Eugene Mitchell was in jail on statutory rape, burglary and child molestation charges, but his father says he is innocent.

Melvin Mitchell says with the police looking for him, Eugene Mitchell’s life is in danger. All he wants is for his son to turn himself in.

“He’s got to man up about it, but the bottom line is that I’m going to do whatever I can. I want him to turn himself in,” he said.

There is a $3,000 reward for information leading to Eugene Mitchell’s capture.
