Police search for men who robbed disabled man

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A disabled man witnessed his own burglary when the suspect realized he couldn’t get out of bed.

"DeKalb police! Twice he shouted "DeKalb police," Brian Huberty told Channel 2 Action News.

Huberty came face-to-face with a burglar while lying in bed inside his DeKalb County home.

“He came to my bedroom door, opened it up and said' DeKalb Police! I saw somebody breaking your window,'" he said.

He told Channel 2's Liz Artz the man was wearing a track suit and had no identification.

Huberty said he told the man, “You don't look like a policeman," and the man said,  'Well I'm community patrol.'"

Huberty has a condition that affects all his muscles. He can not have use of his legs and therefore uses a wheelchair.

"He actually looked in my closet, the basket of wheelchair and actually took something from the basket of my wheelchair," Huberty said.

Huberty told Artz the man also stole several electronics and Huberty briefly considered documenting, with his phone, the man rummaging through his home while he laid in bed helpless.

Huberty said he was finally able to dial 911 and that's when the man left with his belongings.

“It was scary. He could have done violence to me, had he chosen to, and I couldn't have done anything about it," Brian Huberty said.

He said when detectives arrived, they told him he's not the only victim in recent days.

Huberty is planning on installing burglar bars. He said the man broke a window and came in that way. He is also considering getting a dog.

Huberty has a housemate who lives downstairs. He thinks the burglar watched and waited until the housemate left.
