ATLANTA — A local teen with a promising music career was killed before his birthday.

College Park police tell Channel 2 Action News he was shot to death.  His body was found behind a building at the Lakeside Reserve Apartments along Lakemont Drive.

The frigid temperatures didn't keep the family from remembering their loved one.

“Today is his birthday and he would have been 20-years-old,” his father, Daryl Miller said.

A minute's silence was held before balloons were released into the air to celebrate what would have been Donte Miller’s 20th birthday.

"It’s something I know I won’t get over. I just have to learn to live with it," Daryl Miller said.

Daryl Miller is now forced to live with the fact that his youngest son was shot to death last week.

Betty Beasley, the victim’s mother, is also having a hard time processing her pain and why this had to happen.

“I just don’t understand, I just don’t get it,” Beasley said. “He had a lot going for him.”

The family says Donte, who was known “Young Teezy”, was about to be signed to a record deal.

But those dreams were dashed when College Park Police say Donte was found dead at the lakeside reserve apartments behind building number 27.

“He was shot in his back,” Beasley said.

That one bullet that pierced his back has changed this family’s life.

"For the person, persons who did this just show a sign of remorse, and just turn yourself in," Daryl Miller said.

The victim's sister who lives at this complex hasn't been staying there and plans on breaking her lease because she no longer feels safe.

The family told Channel 2's Nefertiti Jaquez they're currently planning Donte's funeral. You can help the family by contributing to the GoFundMe in Donte's name here.
