Police searching for man who beat 57-year-old to death during robbery at MARTA bus stop

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities are asking for your help to identify a suspect who was involved in a deadly attack and robbery of a 57-year-old man.

Channel 2′s Tom Jones was in DeKalb County Thursday, where police released new video of the attack.

Investigators said two men attacked Bruce Mitchell at a MARTA bus stop at Snapfinger Road and Wesley Chapel Road on Aug. 17.

A MARTA bus driver told police she saw the three get into an argument and shortly after, the first suspect began punching and kicking Mitchell. The same suspect grabbed a bag from the victim while continuously beating him. The second suspect then sucker punched Mitchell and began kicking him while he was on the ground, the MARTA bus driver told police. That’s when police say the first suspect stole the Mitchell’s wallet.

A gray SUV came to the scene and picked up the first suspect and drove away from the scene.

Mitchell was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries a few days later.

The first suspect, who appeared shirtless during the attack, has yet to be identified and police are still searching for him.

Police later arrested the second suspect, identified as Joel Baker, on Sept. 3. He was charged with felony murder and other charges.

Jones talked to Reynaldo Williams, a MARTA bus rider who said the attack is shocking.

“It’s senseless, you know what I mean?” Williams said. “I mean, how can someone do something like that sitting at the bus stop? So i’m going to have to check my back.”

Authorities are asking for your help in either learning the suspect’s name or information about the gray SUV that was used at the scene. You’re asked to call 911 or the DeKalb County police department at 678-406-7929.
