The company will open its first Georgia location by 2024 after its success in Florida.

“Our continued expansion plans will allow us to reach more customers with our quality fresh food, beverages and community support friends and neighbors,” said John Poplawski, Vice President of Real Estate for Wawa. “Expanding to Georgia is a natural extension from the Florida Panhandle, and we look forward to serving more communities along the East Coast.”

Wawa’s announcement did not mention where it plans to open the first store. The company says it could potentially open at least 20 more locations in Georgia.

Wawa started as an iron foundry company in 1803 in New Jersey, but didn’t operate as a food market until 1964 in Pennsylvania after its owner became interested in dairy farming.

Since then, it has been a popular spot for northerners for decades. Wawa currently operates nearly 1,000 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Florida, and Washington, D.C.

Wawa isn’t the only popular chain that is expanding to Georgia. Tim Hortons announced in April its plans to open 15 locations. Whataburger also broke ground on several locations in metro Atlanta.
