JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Heavy rain and gusty winds hit metro Atlanta early Thursday and led to several crashes and standing water in some areas.
The heaviest storms are over for the Northside, according to Severe Weather Team 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan.
“This is a really quick-moving system,” Monahan said.
While there were no reports of injuries, standing water blocked at least one right lane on westbound Langford Parkway at Metropolitan Parkway, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. Wind damage was spotted early south of Conyers in Rockdale County.
In Jackson County, houses were damaged, trees were down, roads were blocked and firefighters were going door to door to check on residents, fire Chief Mark Duke told Washington. Crews were working to restore service after a major power outage in the area.
Georgia Power reported 73 outages affecting more than 911 customers just after 10 a.m.
Rain is not expected Friday in metro Atlanta.
However, late-night showers are possible on New Year's Eve. The next substantial rain chance is on New Year’s Day. There is a 90 percent chance of rain that day.
Holiday weekend forecast
The cloud cover will thicken throughout the day on Saturday, with showers moving in late in the day.
Severe Weather Team 2 will be tracking the timing of this weekend’s rain on Channel 2 Action News.
The new year will start off wet and chilly across north Georgia, with showers on and off Sunday. Temperatures will be in the 40s and 50s.
