U.S. Rep. John Lewis was arrested Tuesday in front of the Capitol during a protest advocating reform of the nation’s immigration laws.
The Atlanta Democrat was one of several members of Congress arrested along with other protesters at the culmination of a march up the National Mall, as they locked arms and refused to move from the street.
It was the 45th time Lewis, a major figure in the civil rights movement, has been arrested in acts of civil disobedience, according to a spokeswoman. He was arrested twice at the South African embassy protesting apartheid, twice at the Embassy of the Sudan protesting genocide in Darfur.
Lewis has represented the state's 5th district since 1987.
