Rockdale County Sheriff's deputy involved in crash

ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — A Rockdale County Deputy Sheriff is recovering at an Atlanta hospital after he crashed his patrol car into a fence during a high-speed chase with a van carrying theft suspects.

Deputies have two men in custody and are questioning four others they said were in the van, too.

Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett said this started at a Conyers pawn shop when the men tried to sell stolen merchandise.

The owner alert deputies who arrived and tried to block in their van.  Levett said the men used the van to ram two patrol cars in an attempt to escape.  That led to the chase.

As that chase drove down Callaway Crossing, Levett said Deputy Jerry Poreba lost control of his patrol car and crashed into a fence.

He suffered serious injuries and was taken by Life Flight to Atlanta Medical Center.

Levett said he is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries and appears to be improving.

Levett said the two main suspects ran and tried to hide in a nearby house, but after deputies tracked them there, the SWAT team entered the home and arrested them both.

Only Channel Two Action News was there as deputies made the arrests.

Levett would not identify the two men under arrest, saying only that they stated they arrived from Baltimore, Maryland, Tuesday.  Deputies detained four others and are questioning them about the incident.
