ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. — Former employees at a Conyers business said they are not being paid what they are owed, and now the state is getting involved.
Several people who used to work at R and E Health Care told Channel 2′s Eryn Rogers they are owed between $200 and nearly $4200. One woman also said she is facing eviction since she has not been able to pay her rent.
The Department of Community Health confirmed they are investigating the business but would not comment further.
Zariya Carter worked at the home health provider as a staffing coordinator until November. She said she was not given her final paycheck, and it is causing her stress.
“I’m five months pregnant,” Carter said. “It is the holidays. I have a daughter. I have bills.”

She said she is owed around $700. She said she reached out to the owner, Ella Stephenson, but had a hard time getting a response.
Stephenson told Channel 2 Action News that Carter’s daughter damaged parts of the facility, totaling around $650. When asked to produce receipts for the damage, Stephenson stopped communicating the advice of her lawyer.
Another employee also said she was missing her last paycheck.
“That took food out of my kid’s mouth,” Tiffany Clark said. “I could have used that money to buy my kids food or pay a bill.”
Another employee said she was not given the total amount of her final check. And another employee said he was only paid one check totaling the full amount during his entire length of employment. He believes he is owed $4160.

“At the end of the day, it’s people’s money,” Carter said. “People work hard.”
Two of the employees said they were let go because Stephenson planned to close the business until January. When Channel 2 Action News drove by the business on Milstead Road, a sign on the door said the business was 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, but the doors were locked.
The DCH said their investigation findings will be posted on their website once the investigation is complete.
