Roswell woman starts a food pantry to feed her community

ROSWELL, Ga. — A few weeks ago, Maya Pounds found a way to feed the hungry in her Roswell community. She wants people to know that not everyone in Roswell is well-off.

“It’s been really good to have other people who live in Roswell to see this is happening right here,” Pounds said. “Right here where we live.”

Pounds’ husband built what they call the “Little Free Pantry” at the end of their driveway, at the corner of Mansell Circle and Colonial Park Drive. This is their way to help with homelessness and hunger.

“Take what you need, leave what you can,” is the message the Pounds want to push and it works. Their close friends and complete strangers keep the pantry well stocked.

“I find that it doesn’t matter what you need in this town if you say you need it,” Kim Weber, a family friend said.

The need, according to Pounds, has been so great that she has to refill the cabinet every morning and then again at night.

Some people wait until after dark to come by. Pounds said these are difficult times and no one should be embarrassed.

“It literally hurts my heart to see people struggle. I do see that a lot in this world and right here in my community. So, if I can do just one little thing to help in my little area, it can spread like wildfire. You have to meet people where they’re at,” Pounds said.

This is not only for the pandemic, but this is permanent for anyone who has a need, according to Pounds.
