Shots fired in attempted robbery in Midtown Atlanta

ATLANTA — Atlanta police are investigating an attempted armed robbery on 12th Street in Midtown Atlanta during which shots were fired.

According to police, Marcel Juggopoly and his friend were walking by the 77 12th apartment building when they were approached by a man with a gun.

Juggopoly only told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes what happened when the gunman walked up to them.

"I thought it was a friend at first, but then when he was sticking him (Juggopoly's friend) and pushing him against the glass I saw that he had a Glock in his right hand, and that's when I jumped on him and tried to fight him at first," Juggopoly said.

Juggopoly says he kept his eye on the gun while they were fighting on the sidewalk.

"My first priority was to get the Glock out of his hands and I wasn't able to do that," Juggopoly said. "He threw me off, something like that and he started shooting at me."

Police say it was an attempted robbery and the suspect fired the gun three times.

One of the shots shattered the front door of the 77 12th apartment building.

"When the glass broke, a family was coming through the lobby or coming through the door (and) some of the glass fell on a young toddler," Atlanta police Capt. Steed said.

Grady paramedics treated the girl for some cuts.

"Why somebody would be that bold to do that in Midtown, we're right across from Four Seasons," Juggopoly said. "That's the business district and it's kinda weird someone would do that here."
