MACON, Ga. — A person was hospitalized from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Monday after Marshals investigating the four inmates who escaped from the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center were met with gunfire at an apartment complex.
According to Bibb County Sheriff David Davis, the investigation led U.S. Marshals to The Pines Apartments on Vineville Avenue in Macon to speak to a person of interest who may have a connection to the escaped inmates.
When Marshals knocked on the door, someone inside the apartment began firing shots.

Davis said the Marshals backed off and waited for SWAT to arrive.
When SWAT arrived and went back to the apartment, someone inside the apartment opened the door and told law enforcement that someone inside was suffering from a gunshot wound.
Davis said officers found the man inside, who appeared to be suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Davis said there was no indication that any of the law enforcement officers on the scene fired any shots, but the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the scene.
The gunshot victim is not one of the escapees but is a person of interest who may have a connection to them.
At the time of his statement Monday, Davis said the victim is alive and undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Another person inside the apartment was taken in for questioning.
“We’re gonna get you. We’re gonna find you. The footsteps are moving closer,” Davis said. “We have every local agency involved in this. We have the GBI, we have the FBI, the ATF, U.S. Marshals Service. All of the resources that those agencies bring to bear, they will be found.”
Bibb County deputies recovered the blue Dodge Challenger used by the inmates in their escape.
The car was found on Friday in a parking lot about two miles from the jail.
