BUFORD, Ga. — Two infectious diseases have spread at two trout hatcheries in Georgia.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has located Whirling Disease and Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus in trout at hatcheries in Buford and Summerville.

Neither virus is harmful to humans, but both cause high trout mortality rates and there are no known treatments for them.
DNR’s Wildlife Resources Division is putting a hold on the state’s trout stocking program as they investigate the source of the viruses.

These are the first documented cases of both diseases in Georgia.
