ATLANTA — The Georgia Sons of Confederate Veterans has released a new version of its license plate after finalizing a deal to redesign the plates.
After the Charleston church shootings, Gov. Nathan Deal ordered a halt to the license plates calling for a revamp.
"The Sons of Confederate Veterans' logo has been our logo since 1896. That's 119 years," said the group's spokesman, Dan Coleman.
The logo remains on the new Sons of Confederate Veterans license tags in Georgia, but the faded flag in the background has been removed.
Coleman says as long as the logo is on the plate, the group is satisfied.
The organization says the Confederate flag represents "the Confederate soldier during the War for Southern Independence and is the most recognizable symbol of the South and its glorious heritage."
The new plates are available beginning today at the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles.
