Sons of Braves star, Yankees World Series winner look to carry on families' legacies

Sons of Andruw Jones and C.C. Sabathia The sons of Andruw Jones and CC Sabathia played in a metro Atlanta baseball tournament over the weekend.

The Wilson Premier Classic this weekend in Cartersville gave 88 baseball teams from around the country the chance to compete and show case their skills in front of Major League scouts.

Channel 2′s Alison Mastrangelo spoke with two young players who hope to carry on their families' baseball legacies.

“We’ve been friends for a longtime. My dad and CC played for the Yankees together. That’s when we first met,” Evoshield Generals outfielder Druw Jones said.

If that name looks familiar, it’s because Jones is the son of talented Braves star Andruw Jones. The outfielder won 10 Gold Gloves, a Silver Slugger, the National League Hank Aaron Award and was a five-time All-Star.

“I started out as an infielder and then a little bit of outfield. Mainly I just work my way out to the outfielder. It was comfortable and just came kind of naturally.”

On the same team and playing in the infield, the Generals first baseman Cartsen Sabathia can be spotted. He’s the son of 2009 World Series champion and 2007 American League Cy Young Award winner CC Sabathia.

“I try to soak in as much knowledge as possible because he obviously knows what he’s talking about,” Cartsen said. “I try to sit there and listen, even though sometimes I don’t want to hear it.”

His dad CC Sabathia retired last year after 19 seasons in the league. Now CC Sabathia finally has a chance to be a baseball dad and watch his son play the sport they love.

“I let him do his own thing. But it’s always fun to talk to him and see how he’s feeling,” CC Sabathia said. “I try to let the coaches do the coaching and just be a dad."

So what’s next for these talented young baseball players? Druw Jones has committed to Vanderbilt and Cartsens Sabathia remains uncommitted.

But both of them look forward to finishing their season year of high school and the future.

“To go to the MLB. Hopefully make a long career there,” Jones said. “Just mainly trying to focus on getting to college first.”
