SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — Authorities are investigating after a 23-year-old woman was shot and killed Friday afternoon in the city of South Fulton.

Police said they were called out to a home along Creel Road around 4:30 p.m. Friday after someone shot the woman inside the house.

As investigators searched the home for clues, a woman approached Channel 2's Christian Jennings, saying she was about to take her son to the police precinct for questioning.

“I got a phone call from a police officer saying my son was in the house,” the woman said, asking not to be identified.

She told Jennings that her 16-year-old son said a gun accidentally went off inside the house.

“He said whoever the other person was, I can’t recall the young man’s name, gave him, was trying to give it to him, but he say he never put his hand on it for it to even go off,” the mother said.

Investigators confirmed shortly after 9:30 p.m. that the victim had died from her injuries and that a teen had turned himself in to police and was being charged with murder.

“There were adults and teens in the house. We’re not sure if there was some kind of party going on,” said Sgt. Jubal Rogers, with the South Fulton Police Department.

“The house it happened in, it’s always a lot of traffic in that house. It’s nonstop traffic in that house,” neighbor Elisha Watson said.

Investigators said they found the gun the shooter used.

“We’re not exactly sure what transpired before the shooting. We have detectives on scene interviewing witnesses, trying to gather possible video surveillance in the area,” Rogers said.

Jennings said police were not able to confirm to her whether or not the mother she spoke with is the suspect’s mother.

Police have not released the identity of the woman who was killed.

Investigators said the shooter could face additional charges.
