Cooling stations are open as temperatures continue to soar

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Memorial Day could be a third straight day of record-breaking temperatures. Atlanta just has to get above the 95-degree record set in 1916.

The National Weather Service warns of a weekend heat wave in metro Atlanta area, with highs reaching the upper 90s, for possibly record-setting temperatures.

The City of South Fulton is turning its fire stations into cooling stations this toasty Memorial Day weekend.

Several fire stations are serving as cooling stations.

Each one is expected to offer bottled water, clean bathrooms and plenty of air conditioning.

OPEN COOLING STATIONS: 

• Fire Station 2, 4121 Cascade Road SW in Atlanta

• Fire Station 3, 4035 Stonewall Tell Road in College Park

• Fire Station 5, 3175 Bethsaida Road in Fairburn

• Fire Station 7, 5965 Buffington Road in College Park

• Fire Station 11, 4760 Fulton Industrial Boulevard in Atlanta

• Fire Station 13, 5890 Plummer Road in Atlanta

• Fire Station 15, 6720 Cedar Grove Road in Fairburn

• Fire Station 17, 8675 Ridge Road in Fairburn

City of South Fulton residents like Anita Harris said over the weekend they were not taking any chances.

"I'm staying in the house," Harris said. "Even if you're going to the beach, you burn up there, too."

On Friday night, Channel 2's Michael Seiden stopped by the Publix on Cascade Road, where dozens of shoppers were stocking up on essentials like water.

"I would say about 45 cases of water, so far," one shopper said. "Preparing for a long weekend.
