Road rage incident leads to rolling shootout, crash near busy shopping plaza

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — Police said a road rage incident led to a rolling shootout and then a car crash near an LA Fitness in South Fulton County.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes was at the scene, where a car was crashed into a light pole. Police said the incident started just before noon as the cars were driving by the Little Caesar’s Restaurant in a shopping center on Old National Highway.

Police said both vehicles were traveling in the same direction when the occupants in one vehicle started shooting at the other one. A red car crashed into the woods. Police have searched the woods but have not been able to locate the driver

Police have also not been able to identify the other vehicle involved or who may have been driving.

Witnesses said they heard dozens shots ring out in the area and saw smoke where a car crashed into the wood line. Witnesses also said they saw a person that was shot in the crashed car, but police said that they have not found anyone with a gunshot wound.

Channel 2′s Tyisha Fernandes was in South Fulton County, where witnesses said the impact of the crash was so loud that it sounded like an explosion.

“I was leaving the Walmart parking lot there, and my brother was sitting on my vehicle and heard gunshots,” Norman Hayes said. “I came out because the power was out. We see a lot of road rage but nothing of this sort - when you’re talking about actually pulling a weapon and using it on someone.”

It’s unclear if anyone else has been injured or how many people may have been involved.

Power to several businesses was knocked out.

Neighbors said they just want the area to be safe.

“We just don’t want this to happen over here, you know?” one witness said. “We have kids and elderly people walking to the plaza.”
