SPALDING COUNTY, Ga. — Channel 2 Action News learned someone stabbed a newly elected Spalding County school board member, who is now recovering in the intensive care unit at Atlanta Medical Center.

Ricardo Syntel Brown, 33, was stabbed more than 17 times outside his home in Griffin on Monday around 9 a.m.

Deputies told Channel 2's Tyisha Fernandes they know exactly who stabbed the school board member. However, deputies have not yet made an arrest because they are trying to figure out if the stabbing was self-defense.

They turned the case over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and GBI officials went to AMC on Thursday and interviewed the victim from his hospital bed.

"He was finally in a coherent state, enough to tell his side of the story," said Brown's attorney, Tiffany Simmons. "He’s doing better than the first time that I met with him. He’s still in a lot of pain."

Relatives of Brown are still very upset about what happened and they want the person responsible to be arrested.

"He didn’t even have time to properly defend himself," Simmons said.

Simmons believes that after GBI officials review all the evidence, an arrest will follow.

"My client is in ICU with over 17 stab wounds. That person should’ve been charged the day it happened," Simmons said.

GBI officials said the investigation is ongoing.
