Body cam video shows deputy chase stolen car suspect

COWETA COUNTY, Ga. — Body camera video shows a deputy chasing down an SUV stolen out of Atlanta.

The driver refused to stop and lost control in a Coweta County neighborhood.

The chase started Wednesday night on Interstate 85 when a deputy tried to pull a driver over for a broken tail light. The deputy quickly realized the SUV was stolen.

The chase ended when the driver, identified as Donta Thomas, 21, crashed into a tree in a neighborhood, then ran into the woods. There were two teenaged girls in the SUV as well.

“Seeing the K-9 and seeing the police officers with their guns drawn and walking towards the golf course… It was scary,” neighbor Mindy Powell said.

Deputies tracked Thomas down about a mile away from the cul-de-sac where he crashed.

Video shows the tense moments when deputies drew their guns.

“I heard screaming and yelling to get to the ground,” Powell said.

Thomas and his two passengers were injured in the crash and are recovering at the hospital.

Deputies said the teenagers are not facing any charges.

Channel 2’s Chris Jose learned Thomas was already wanted for a carjacking in Douglas County.

He will be facing numerous charges once he is released from the hospital.
