TROUP COUNTY, Ga. — Authorities in Troup County are releasing more details in the murder of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The suspect in the murder, Alonzo Dargan Jr., was arrested Thursday in North Carolina.

The Troup County sheriff’s office held a news conference Friday and revealed that Dargan was the unborn child’s father.

First responders found Akeila Ware, 29, dead inside her wrecked car Tuesday afternoon. She was shot multiple times.

Investigators used evidence at the scene to connect Dargan, who is stationed at Fort Bragg Army Base in North Carolina, to the murder. They said evidence placed him in Troup County at the time of the murder.

Authorities said Ware, a mother of 5, and Dargan, who is married to another woman and had children with her, were in a relationship together.

The sheriff’s office said Dargan was following Ware in a car on Highway 18 and then opened fire on her.

Authorities said Dargan grew up in Troup County and went to school with Ware.

Nolan Dedmon, who lives near the scene of the deadly shooting, said this kind of thing is hard to believe.

“It’s terrible. It’s bad enough to get shot, but a pregnant woman really makes it bad,” Dedmon said.
