Three friends decided to swim to a rock in a Georgia park, one never made it

BIBB COUNTY, Ga. — Emergency crews are searching for a possible drowning victim at Frank Amerson Park Ocmulgee River. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and members of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources are helping with the investigation and search.

Witnesses told the Sheriff’s Office three men came to the park and decided to swim. The three swam against the current to an area where rocks were visible above the water.

When two of the men reached the rocks, they noticed the third man was struggling against the current, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Investigators say the men tried to help the man who was struggling but lost sight of him.

Dive teams searched Wednesday for the man but stopped around 7:30 p.m. The search was set to continue on Thursday.

The park has been the scene of several drownings. Channel 2 Action News reported on a teenage girl who died in May of 2022. Three other family members were hospitalized in the incident.

At the time, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office reminded everyone to wear life jackets while on the river.
