ATLANTA — Atlanta police say a man is dead after he tried to cross I-20 around 6 a.m. Wednesday and caused a chain-reaction crash.

The accident happened near Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard.

Police say the man was hit by one driver and killed right near the median wall on the eastbound side of the highway. A number of cars then crashed trying to avoid the initial wreck.

Triple Team Traffic's Mark McKay counted at least 10 cars involved in subsequent crashes from NewsChopper 2 over the area.

One other driver was taken to the hospital.

Atlanta Fire officials, three Grady Memorial hospital ambulances and several police officers were on the scene.

Cars on I-20 had to divert onto Joseph E. Lowery Blvd., which caused traffic to back up for hours.

The highway reopened around 10 a.m.

Police have not released the name or age of the victim or why he may have been walking across the busy interstate.
