Irma weakens to a tropical depression

ATLANTA — Several hours after Irma moved into metro Atlanta on Monday, the storm has been downgraded to a tropical depression.

Here is the minute-by-minute update on the storm's impact in the state:

10:40 p.m. Tropical Storm Irma has weakened to a tropical depression.

10:16 p.m. Uber will resume service the morning of Tuesday, September 12.

10:02 p.m. Sandy Springs officials are asking drivers to stay off the roads. More than 30 roads are impacted by down power lines.

9:45 p.m. Gwinnett County police and fire are responding to many wire/tree down calls all over the area. Road conditions are hazardous and they are asking drivers to stay off the roads.

9:04 p.m. East Point City Government will be closed Tuesday, September 12th.

8:53 p.m. Georgia Power says 950,000 people in Georgia are without power.

8:17 p.m. City and county offices in Griffin will be closed Tuesday, September 12th.

8:05 p.m. Johns City Creek city offices will be closed Tuesday, September 12th.

8:00 p.m. City of Gainesville government offices will be closed Tuesday, September 12th. Meals on Wheels and Gainesville Connection will not operate.

8:00 p.m. Georgia EMC reports 537,000 customers are without power.

7:59 p.m. Rockdale County implements voluntary curfew starting at 8 p.m. Monday, September 11th ending at 6 a.m. Tuesday, September 12th.

6:45 pm. Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says a woman was killed when a tree fell down on a car in a private driveway.

6:25 p.m. Authorities report first death in South Carolina related to Tropical Storm Irma; total death toll of storm now at 42, per Associated Press.

6:04 p.m. Zoo Atlanta will be closed Tuesday, September 12. Officials with the attraction have not announced if it will reopen Wednesday.

5:00 p.m. According to Georgia Power, as of 5 p.m. nearly 50 percent of Georgia's population is without power. The company said its prepared to respond with nearly 5,500 personnel from the company.

4:56 p.m. Super market chain Publix announces all metro Atlanta stores will close at 7 p.m. Monday, September 11th. The chain plans to open at 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 12 weather permitting.

4:45 p.m. MARTA will resume limited bus, paratransit and rail services Tuesday, September 12 beginning at 7 a.m. In a news release, the agency says they will resume all of their services systemwide as weather conditions improve.

4:20 p.m. Police say a 55-year-old man was killed when a tree fell on his home in Sandy Springs.

4:13 p.m.: Georgia Power spokesperson says more than 20 states are sending help to Georgia.

3:56 p.m.: Brookhaven police tweeted out that Buford Highway is shut down in both directions in front of 2800 Buford Highway.

3:45 p.m.: Sources tell Channel 2 Action News Sports Director Zach Klein that Georgia Tech will not play at the University of Central Florida in Orlando this weekend due to Irma.

3:42 p.m.: Atlanta police tweeted a warning for residents to only call 911 for life-threatening emergencies.

3:34 p.m.: Habersham County reports schools will be closed Tuesday due to the weather.

3:27 p.m.: Channel 2's Wendy Corona reports that Georgia Power has 3,400 personnel are on standby to restore power once the storm passes.

3:25 p.m.: Conyers police report that a large tree has fallen onto I-20 E between West Avenue and Sigman Road.

3:17 p.m.: Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports that GDOT says a tree is down on I-85 at Camp Creek Road and at I-20 near H.E. Holmes.

3:14 p.m.: Channel 2's Aaron Diamant tweeted video of a driver pulling a downed tree out of the road so that a fire truck could get through.

3:09 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan reports gusts of 50 mph in midtown Atlanta.

3:06 p.m.: It has been blamed for one Georgia death so far, in Worth County near Albany, officials said. He was killed Monday morning after heavy winds swept him off his roof.  The man's identity was not made available

3:01 p.m.: Alpharetta police says that all traffic lights from Old Milton/GA-400 to Park Bridge Parkway are out.

2:47 p.m.: Georgia EMC reports 375,000 of its customers are without power, bringing the total in Georgia to around 1 million.

2:42 p.m.: Uber announces that it is suspending operations in the Atlanta area due to deteriorating weather conditions.

2:39 p.m.: Channel 2's Richard Elliot reports that GEMA says 918,000 people are without power in Georgia.

2:33 p.m.: Channel 2's Chris Jose in Brunswick learned from officials that 70 percent of the pumps stations are "out" due to power outages - so residents need to conserve water.

2:31 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Katie Walls reports that drivers on I-20 in Douglas County are dealing strong winds that are causing them to swerve on the road.

2:29 p.m.: Channel 2's Sophia Choi reports on trees down in Oconee County due to the high winds.

2:23 p.m.: Channel 2's Tom Regan describes the Atlanta airport as a "ghost town" as hundreds of flights are canceled due to Irma.

2:10 p.m.: Channel 2's Lori Wilson said power lines are down in Clayton County.

1:58 p.m.: Channel 2's Liz Artz is at the scene of a down 65 food pine tree in DeKalb County.

1:42 p.m.: Georgia Southern tweeted that its campus has lost power. The school is urging residents on campus to shelter in place.

1:35 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan reported Irma's center is expect to be in Georgia's southwest counties by 8 p.m.

1:20 p.m.: Channel 2's Chris Jose reports flooding in Brunswick.

1:10 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brad Nitz reports a wind gust of up to 61 mph in Macon, Georgia.

1:03 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Brian Monahan said bands of heavy rain will continue as well – with 3-5" possible across much of the area.

1 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Katie Walls reports that Barrow, Fulton and Fayette counties are reporting tropical storm force winds - sustained 39+ mph.

12:45 p.m.: Peachtree Street between Decatur & Auburn closed due debris falling from building as winds from Irma pick up downtown.

12:30 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton said there was a reported gust of 50 mph at the Atlanta airport.

12:23 p.m. Georgia Power tells Channel 2's Richard Belcher that there are a total of 364,000 power outages across the state.

12:22 p.m.: Channel 2's Chris Jose tweeted video of an awning blown over from Irma's winds in Brunswick.

12:20 p.m.: Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton said on Channel 2 Action News at Noon there were many reports of trees down in Morgan County.

11:35 a.m.: Clayton County Fire reports tree down at Kyle Springs Lane. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.

11:15 a.m.: Southwest Airlines announced it would cancel all flights from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after 1 p.m. due to potentially dangerous wind conditions.

11:05 a.m.: A tree crashed and blocked Clifton Church Road in DeKalb. Neighbors told Channel 2's Linda Stouffer that the power lines sparked as it crashed.

10:35 a.m.: More than 438,000 customers across Georgia are now without power, according to Georgia Power and EMC.

10:10 a.m.: State transportation officials say an easy morning commute and relatively light winds and rain should not lull metro Atlanta residents into thinking it's safe to go out. 

10:05 a.m.: Tree crashes into Sandy Springs home as Irma blew through. No one was seriously injured.

9:55 a.m.: Channel 2's Chris Jose reports in Waycross, Georgia that conditions are very windy and rainy.

8 a.m.: Irma is downgraded to a tropical storm with winds at 70 mph over north Florida.

6:15 a.m.: Georgia Power reports more than 97,000 customers without power and EMC reports more than 49,000 customers without power.
