GORDON COUNTY, Ga. — A man has died after being shot while deputies tried arresting him in Gordon County early Tuesday morning.

According to the Gordon County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy tried to stop a truck around 1 a.m. on Cook Road.
The driver, later identified as 51-year-old Billy Dewayne Couch, sped off and drove to the back of a home in the Sugar Valley community.
The deputy blocked Couch’s truck in and told him to get out of the car with his hands up, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The GBI says the deputy continued giving Couch verbal commands. The sheriff’s office says Couch ran off after getting out of the car.
At some point in the incident, the deputy shot Couch. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The GBI confirmed that Couch was not armed during the incident.
They say their investigation is ongoing.
